Dengue Threatens
Carnavales de Limón
The annual Limón
carnival may be
cancelled if the number
of cases of Dengue does
not decrease over the
next couple of weeks,
said authorities from
the Ministerio de Salud
yesterday.
The health ministry has
a reported 3.413 cases
of classic dengue and 40
cases of the more
dangerous hemorrhagic
type of dengue.
Health minister, María
Luisa Ávila Agüero, said
that the reduction will
depend on the residents
co-operating in taking
action against the
dengue.
The Limón carnival is
held the first week in
October.
Minister Avial said that
the number of people
infected with dengue,
transmitted by Aedes
Aegypti mosquito, would
have to decrease at
least 20% for the
carnival to take place.
Health ministry
statistics for this year
reveal that there are
more than 8.000 cases of
classic dengue and 96 of
the hemorrhagic type in
the country and two
people have died so far.
The minister said that
the dengue is being
fought on three fronts:
a specialized team
working the dengue
clinic at the Tony Facio
hospital, the second is
an early diagnosis as
the EBAIS where health
officials are on alert
for symptoms and the
third is to eliminate
breeding grounds of the
mosquito that carries
the disease.
Minister Avila added
that in some cases they
have had to use the
Fuerza Pública (police)
to enter area homes to
fumigate. |
