Massive flame engulfs
crashed Brazilian plane
A massive fire broke out
after a Brazilian
passenger plane carrying
at least 170 people
skidded off a runway and
crashed into a gas
station, making the
rescue work even more
difficult, according to
media reports Wednesday.
A Tam airline's
Airbus-320 crashed and
burst into flames in Sao
Paulo on Tuesday after
skidding across a busy
road at rush hour,
airport authority said.
TV images showed orange
flames lit the night sky
and clouds of heavy
black smoke poured into
the air, which was
visible at least a mile
away.
The plane's fuselage was
inside a building and
engulfed in flames,
making it impossible for
rescue workers to reach
it.
Tam said 31 fire trucks
were on the scene
battling the blaze
caused by the accident.
Firefighters told RedeTV
reporters their main
concern was that a
building near the fuel
station, which is also
on fire, could collapse.
The risk of an explosion
"is imminent," officials
in charge of the rescue
were quoted as saying.
There is no immediate
report on casualties.
Brazil's Globo News
television said at least
six people were taken to
the hospital.
Tuesday's crash came 10
months after Brazil's
worst air accident, a
September collision
between a Brazilian
passenger plane and a
small executive jet over
the Amazon jungle.
