Guatemala for Migrants'
Rights
Guatemalan authorities
will urge the US to
respect the human rights
of migrants, during the
visit US Secretary of
State for Hemispheric
Affairs Thomas Shannon
in this country on
Tuesday.
Shannon will meet with
President Oscar Berger,
Vice President Eduardo
Stein, other
governmental officials,
and leaders of the
Central American
Integration System, with
security issues
centering the talks.
"It is paradoxical that
the US deport
Guatemalans when they
are contributing to the
economy of both
countries," the
president stated.
Foreign Minister Gert
Rosenthal declared they
will strongly demand
that Guatemalans' rights
are respected during the
raids and expatriations,
as there have been
denunciations of abuse
by US migratory
authorities, he noted.
The main objective of
Shannon's visit is to
review the regional
meeting held last week
in the country, where it
was agreed to create a
strategy to fight drug
trafficking, organized
crime, and gangs. |
