Menchu calls to Build
Pluralist Guatemala
The Guatemalan
indigenous are now in
the process of passing
from resistance to
power, affirmed
Rigoberta Menchu while
explaining her
government's program to
thousands of farmers´
leaders.
Invited to the Tenth
National Assembly of the
Coordinadora Nacional
Indigena y Campesina
(CONIC), held at
Quetzaltenango City, the
presidential candidate
of the Guatemalan
Partido Encuentro
assured she will boost a
plural and inclusive
government.
"The governing power has
always been in the same
sector's hands that have
never included native
peoples giving way to a
monoculture State, which
must change now," noted
the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Guatemala must be
restructured with four
heads, Mayas, Incas,
garifunas and Ladinos,"
said the first
indigenous lady who
hopes to rule the
nation's destiny.
Menchu said that if she
assumed power,
evacuation and
persecution of farmer's
leaders would cease and
promote a law to cancel
the agrarian reform.
She called to gain time
and organize the
population to begin
working since the very
first moment and build a
new country with equal
conditions of rights and
opportunities, as stated
in the Constitution.
The Presidential
candidate appeared
-according to polls-
between the third and
the fourth place of vote
intention of a list of
14 candidates to the
presidency in upcoming
September 9 elections. |
