Employers Must Give Time
Off To Vote in
Referendum
Come Sunday October 7,
employers must give
their employees working
that day, one hour off
work to allow them to
get out to vote on the
trade deal referendum.
The referendum on the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) that will
be held on the first
Sunday in October is
subject to the Código
Electoral (election
code), where article
168, clearly stipulates
that employers are
obligated to give their
employees time to vote.
The employer will,
however, be able to
stipulate the specific
time it will give the
employee to get to vote.
The law prohibits any
employer to sanction of
dock an employee's
salary for the time off
work to vote.
