Zona Sur Gets An
Airport
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias Sánchez,
with his minister of
Transportes, Karla
González and the
vice-minister of
Transportes and
president of the Consejo
Técnico de Aviación
Civil (CTAC), Viviana
Martín Salazar at his
side, signed a
co-operation agreement
with the Junta de
Desarrollo Regional de
la Zona Sur (JUDESUR),
for the construction of
an airport in the Zona
Sur (Southern Zone)
The event took place in
Palmar Sur and where the
announcement was made
for the first stage of
the project that will
include a landing strip
of 1.8 kilometres that
can accommodate ATR and
Dash8 aircrafts
currently being operated
by Sanza and Nature Air
with a capacity of 48
and 50 passengers,
respectively.
The second stage of the
project is to extend the
runway to allow landings
of aircrafts the size of
a 737, when completed
with a runway of 2.9
kilometres.
"I am very satisfied to
be able to give this
area an airport that can
accommodate jets like
the ones now landing in
Liberia and is changing
the face of Guanacaste",
said Arias.
The agreement calls for
JUDESUR to transfer to
CTAC ¢600 million
colones that will be
utilized by the OACI (Organización
de Aviación Civil
Internacional) to
complete the required
technical study to be
incorporated in the Plan
Maestro (Master Plan)
for the development of
the project.
Vice-minister Martín,
said that the Zona Sur
airport will have
different
characteristics than the
other regional airports
in that it will not
negatively impact the
environment and
ecosystems of the
region, which will
include strict
management of solid and
liquid waste.
The new airport will be
built in the area known
as Valle del Sierpe on
lands owned by the
Instituto de Desarrollo
Agrario (IDA) that will
include a 500 square
metre terminal.
