Peruvian Teachers Repeal
Law
Peruvian teachers are
still on strike Saturday
for an indefinite
period, to demand the
repeal of the Teachers
Career Law, for being
termed privatizing, and
the release of over 100
detained professors.
Public teachers have
started a general strike
10 days ago against the
mentioned normative that
oblige them to be
evaluated periodically,
with the risk of being
fired if they flunked
three consecutive tests.
Parallel to the
teachers' strike is that
of other unions to
demand, among other
things, equal
distribution of riches,
what provoked a wave of
strikes, a situation
termed by experts as the
worst crisis of the
Garcia government.
On Friday, soldiers took
the streets with armored
vehicles, launched tear
gases against strikers
and detained dozens of
teachers, mainly in the
capital.
Luis Munoz, general
secretary of the Unitary
Trade Union of
Educational Workers, who
was detained Thursday
and released Friday,
termed arbitrariness the
detention of the
country's 150 teachers
who participated in the
protest.
Former Presidential
candidate Ollanta Humala
said that the situation
could be worsened next
months, because the
government itself is
generating all
conditions for a
