Guatemala: No Ex-Dictator to Congress
Indigenous leader and Nobel Peace Prizewinner Rigoberta Menchu rejected the pretensions of ex Dictator Efrain Rios Montt to preside over the Congress of the Guatemalan Republic.

That is an insult, said Menchu and recalled that before aspiring to popular election Rios Montt should resolve the trial he is embroiled in.

The Guatemalan ex-dictator (1982-1983) is accused of genocide and extrajudicial executions committed during his administration and there is an international warrant, with possibilities of an order of extradition.

Humanitarian activists denounced that, with his plan to be elected deputy and lead Congress, Rios Montt intends to guarantee his immunity and avoid his crimes against humanity.

The 81-year-old retired general was in the presidency from 2000 to 2003 and has tried to lead the country s Legislature twice.
