ICE Plays Santa With
Free Cellular Services
The Instituto
Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE)
informs that for
customers who are using
the GSM technology will
be able to access three
new services, and for
fee.
ICE will, for a limited
time, allow the transfer
of images, audio and
video over its cellular
network to those
customers who are
already subscribed to
the GPRS (internet).
The service is free
because ICE requires the
approval by the
Autoridad Reguladora de
Servicios Públicos (ARESEP)
- the regulator of
public prices and
services - before it can
start to charge for the
service.
ICE subscribed thousands
of customer to its
"Internet Móvil" service
free of charge for more
than two years while
waiting for ARESEP
approval. Though the
approval for the new
services is expected in
a shorter time, it could
be months before the
regulator sets a rate.
The cost for the
Internet Móvil is ¢3.500
colones plus tax
monthly. There is no
word on the cost of the
additional services.
In addition, ICE will
soon begin offering
television broadcasts to
its Internet Acelera
subscribers.
Acelera is ICE's ADSL
internet connection by
way of a fixed line
telephone. The
connection is permanent
internet connection,
like that of a cable
modem connection, using
a telephone line,
starting at us$19 per
month for a 256/128 Kbps
connection to us$169 per
month to a 4096/768 Kpbs
