Ecuador Eradicating
Child Begging
The Ecuadorian
government boosts
Thursday a national plan
to reduce street
begging, especially in
children.
The program called "An
Honorable and Caring
Christmas: No Child
Begging" seeks to give a
different face to this
holiday among children.
Boosted by the Economic
and Social Inclusion
Ministry (MIES) and the
National Institute for
Childhood and Family (INNFA),
nearly 67 centers called
"Alegria" were created
since the beginning of
this month to receive
donations.
Parallel to this is a
campaign to eradicate
infant begging as a
public policy.
MIES Minister Jeannette
Sanchez stated that
about six million
children from La Sierra
and La Costa are obliged
to beg, while the figure
in the East reaches
1,000, although other
sources say there are
more.
The government knows
that the program won't
eradicate that problem,
but it already gave the
first step to fight that
unpleasant activity, the
minister said.
Sanchez expressed the
need to adopt structural
measures to fight
poverty, with credit and
employment programs.
