Nicaraguan Court Upholds
Former President Aleman
Sentence
Managua's first Penal
Hall Appeals Court
upheld on Thursday the
20-year prison sentence
against former President
Arnoldo Aleman for
corruption.
The court president
Ileana Perez said Aleman
will serve his sentence
under the "house for
jail" regime, namely,
house arrest.
But she added that the
National Penitentiary
System officials will
eventually decide where
he will serve his
sentence.
Aleman was convicted and
sentenced to a 20-year
prison term in 2003 for
money laundering and
embezzlement, but later
freed under a parole
that restricted his
movements to the capital
city of Managua.
That parole was relaxed
earlier in 2007 by
Nicaragua's National
Penitentiary System,
which granted Aleman
free rein to travel
throughout the country.
His whereabouts on
Thursday was not
immediately known.
