Panama Doctors Strike
Nearing a Solution
Government and
physicians in a nearly
six-week strike neared
an agreement in
principle to end the
protest, after having an
unexpected night of
negotiations that lasted
until morning.
According to what Health
Minister Rosario Turner
explained, it is about a
document in which both
parts signed commitments
to lift the strike
initiated on November 6.
Since then, more than
600,000 medical
appointments and
thousands of surgeries
already programmed were
cancelled, which was
described by the
Director of Social
Secure Box Rene Luciani
as "a health crisis" the
government hopes to
solve in 24 hours.
During the meeting,
convened by the
Executive addressed to
negotiate until reaching
a consensus Health
Minister presented to
physicians a new offer
of a salary increase in
25 percent of current
salaries.
Turner said it is about
salary increases ranging
between 125 dollars for
interns until 500 for
