Escazú Monument Stirs
Controversy
The approval by the
Municipalidad de Escazú,
west of San José, of use
of ¢40 million colones
(us$80.000) to build a
monument to the "boyero"
has caused controversy
between municipal
officials and residents.
The municipality
approved a "fast track"
bidding proposal for the
construction of the
monument, which is to be
located in San Antonio,
the "cuna del boyero".
According to Escazú
mayor, Marco Segura, the
municipality has
followed the process
required for a public
contract.
"Where is the
controversy? if it is
the cost, it will be ¢40
million colones to build
the symbol", said
Segura.
However, residents feel
that the municipality is
spending too much on the
work and that there are
other necessities which
should be attended to
