Price Hikes Hurt
Guatemalans
The increase of the cost
of food and gas are
hitting the economy of
the Guatemalan family
hard.
The National Association
of Poultry Breeders (ANAVI)
said a carton of eggs
went up a more than 29
percent because of
increased farm
production costs on
everything from feed to
diesel, ANAVI President
Maria del Rosario Falla
said on Wednesday.
This in turn causes
other price increases,
for example on bread and
bakery products, but
those are not expected
to go up this month.
Meanwhile, a 35-pound
gas cylinder is 22.4
dollars, 16 percent more
than in October and a 26
percent price increase
this year, forcing many
families to use wood for
cooking.
Mario Alvizurez, an
expert from a Guatemalan
market association,
mentioned price
increases on imported
chicken meat, white
beans, corn and
tomatoes, all part of
the traditional
Guatemalan diet. |
