US Deports Record Number
of Guatemalans
So far this year, 3,000
more Guatemalans have
been deported from the
United States than the
record high of 18,000
hit last year,
immigration authorities
admitted on Wednesday.
According to Immigration
Director Santos Cuc,
21,305 people have been
deported to date and, if
current weekly flights
continue, this year
might end with over
23,000 people deported.
Minister of Foreign
Relations Gert Rosenthal
said that in the last
six months the situation
of illegal Guatemalans
living in the United
States has worsened
considerably, mainly due
to a tougher immigration
policy there, leading to
a countrywide
persecution against
people without
documents.
Attention to Guatemalan
people living abroad
must be a priority of
the future government to
guarantee respect of
their human rights and
decent treatment,
Rosenthal asserted. |
