Guatemalans Reject
Deputy Privileges
The recent law passed by
Guatemalan legislators
giving themselves a
salary increase,
compensations and other
perks with state funds
has fired the people's
indignation, as borne
out by several polls.
Leaders of the main
parties, UNE (National
Unit of Hope), GANA
(Grand National
Alliance) and the
Patriot Party, said they
were not consulted about
the decision to approve
that bill, while some
parties are considering
sanctions against their
legislators.
The GANA executive
committee did not rule
out expelling Jorge
Mendez, chief of GANA's
legislators, and
assistant chief Jaime
Martinez, for voting in
favor of these reforms
to the Civil Service
law.
Vice President-elect
Rafael Espada confirmed
that the UNE leadership
would wait to analyze
the situation and adopt
measures until
Guatemalan future
President Alvaro Colom's
return to the country.
New Nation Alliance, the
members of which
withdrew from the
congressional chamber
when the vote was about
to be cast, denounced
that the action was
prepared well in
advance.
Parties such as UASP
(Unity of Union and
People's Action), FNL
(National Front for
Struggle) and COS
(Social Organizations
Collective) are leading
the rejection of this
practice, which they
consider an affront to
the majority of the
population, which lives
in terrible poverty. |
