Mother's Day Will Be On
The 20th. It's Official!
Mother's Day will
definitely not be
celebrated on August
15th this year, as the
proposal to move the
holiday back to the day
it falls and not the
following Monday, will
not be passed in time
for this year.
Though the president of
the legislature, Antonio
Pacheco, scheduled the
second debate for
Tuesday, August 14, even
if passed, there is not
time for the law to take
effect the following
day.
So, the holiday will be
celebrated on Monday,
August 20, though a many
Costa Ricans will not
break from tradition and
celebrate the day on the
15th.
Legislators voted in
2005 to move holidays
like Mother's Day and
the holidays of April
11, July 25 and October
12, to the following
Monday when they fall
during the week. The
move was to give Costa
Ricans a long weekend
and to not disrupt the
work week.
However, other than the
April 11 and October 12
holidays, Mother's Day
and the Annexation of
Guanacaste holidays move
have been met with
resistance to change.
