Military maneuvers
Panamax 2007, led by the
US South Command, will
start Thursday with
military exercises on
the ground with
Panamanian forces, said
Panamanian newspaper La
Prensa Tuesday.
Panamax 2007 is the
third and final stage of
an operation by the US
South Command, spreading
down to South America
and the coasts of the
Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans.
US will command a force
of 20 countries, which
supposedly would act to
guarantee security in
the Panama Canal, with
the support of the
Organization of American
States and the UN
Security Council.
The exercises with the
Panamanian forces will
be until August 20, and
a more complex stage
would begin three weeks
later, with simulated
actions at both Panama
Canal access ways.
The US South Command
said that if the
Panamanian government
finally approves it, a
limited number of US
units would operate in
Panamanian national
waters.
Panamax 2007 will be led
by US Navy Vice Admiral
Evan Chanik, with
participation of ships,
airplanes and troops
from Argentina, Brazil,
Canada, Chile, Colombia,
Ecuador, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras,
Mexico, Nicaragua and
other Latin American
countries, with the
support of the UK. |
