Yellow Cab Getting Ready
for Costa Rica
The constant fight
between taxistas
(official taxis) and
porteadores (informal
taxis) may soon be over
if the Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States - is
approved, following the
registration of Yellow
Cab CR S.A.
Legislator Oscar López
believes this is what
the government has up
its sleeve to end the
ongoing debate between
the taxistas and
porteadores.
The registration of
Yellow Cab is confirmed
in the Registro de la
Propriedad (property
registry) and is owned
by a Central American
consortium that
specializes in highway
demarcations.
López assures that the
American company is
ready to enter the Costa
Rican market. "They are
only waiting for the
approval of the TLC as
another international
company to invest in the
country. The TLC permits
equal treatement and in
this way will bring a
conclusion to the
taxistas and porteadores",
said López.
According to López, if
the TLC is approved the
government cannot
guarantee the monopoly
like taxi service
because allowing
competition is part of
the trade agreement.
The million dollar
question, according to
López, is how could the
registry allow the
registration of a "Clase
39 Internacional"
without any problems to
the current law "Ley de
Taxis".
