Drug Base Camp Uncovered
Near Quepos
Authorities say they
have uncovered what they
believe is base camp for
drug traffickers to move
drugs through Costa
Rica. The camp was
located in the area of
Portálon, near Quepos,
on the Central Pacific
coast.
The discovery was
announced yesterday by
the ministro de
Seguridad Pública,
Fernando Berrocal.
The alleged operation
was composed of several
tents storing some 150
quarts of oil and 600
gallons of gasoline,
used in two speed boats.
Two Colombian nationals
were detained by
authorities while the
Seguridad ministry is
asking for the help of
the U.S. Coast guard to
track another boat used
by the drug traffickers
that got away from them.
The camp was observed
overhead by authorities
in a small plane before
raiding the site.
No drugs were found in
the camp that
authorities believe was
used as a central
operations for drug
trafficking from
Colombia to the United
States.
Authorities believe that
they will find the drugs
in the confiscated boat
and the once they
capture the one that got
away.
On land, police are
maintaining a massive
operation requiring
additional manpower from
San José in their fight
against drug trafficking
