"ICE President Should Resign", Union Leader Says
According to the secretary general of ANEP, Albino Vargas, the president of ICE, Pedro Pablo Quirós, should resign given the situation the country is facing.

The leader of one of the strongest union of public employees said that the call for the head of ICE's president came last week when the country went into total darkness, saying that the utility head is directly responsible for all that is happened.

The union leader added that the power cuts and shortages are directly related to opening of the telecommunications and the referendum on the free trade deal, the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC).

"Given that ICE is so popular and loved by the people, nothing would give it a harder blow to its credibility and prestige, at this point in time, so that the people believe that the best is for its opening, which is necessary, however, if the TLC is approved, we will have to get use to blackouts", said Vargas.

Vargas assures that the blackouts will continue and with more frequency as it is in the rest of Central America and other countries where electricity is in the hands of private companies.

In the face of the union leaders accusation that the government is directly responsible for the energy crisis, especially with the intent to tarnish the image of the Institución, the ministro de la Presidencia, Rodrigo Arias, emphatically said that is not so.

"Never is there anything farther from the truth", said minister Arias.

"No one can predict the water levels at the reservoirs and that the summer would be so intense.

Even though we knew that the reservoirs were having problems projections showed that there would be no problems during this season, however, there are", said minister Arias.

The brother to president Oscar Arias, denied any relationship between the current energy problems and the current political climate, with respects to the free trade deal.
