Strong Earthquake Hits Southern
Chile
A
6.2-magnitude earthquake hit
southern Chile on Saturday,
causing power and communication
interruptions. There was no
report of casualties.
The tremor occurred at 13:50
local time (1750 GMT) with its
epicenter located 1,320 km south
of the capital Santiago, near
the city of Coyhaique, according
to the disaster agency Onemi.
It was the strongest of more
than 1,000 quakes that have
jolted the region this year.
Onemi said there was a 45-minute
power outage with mobile phone
services suspended. It also
reported landslides and large
waves off the Pacific coast.
