Latin American Medicine School Rector Visits Guatemala
The Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) Rector Juan Carrizo began on Thursday a visit to Guatemala, where he will meet students and graduates of that center, parents, and Cuban collaborators in Guatemala.

"The main objective is to assess the work in this country to form the youths in their sixth year of their studies and those who are specializing in Integral General Medicine," Carrizo told Prensa Latina.

He will also analyze the working perspectives of the Cuban Medical Brigade´s work, carried out by more than 300 doctors, and will meet health authorities and academicians.

The rector reported that the medicine school, in Havana´s western region, is getting ready for graduating 1,500 new doctors, with whom the number of graduates from that center will reach 4,700, and 430 of them are Guatemalans.

The ELAM was founded in 1999, as an initiative of Cuban President Fidel Castro, to help the Central American countries, affected by the hurricane Mitch, extending it later to several continents.

More than 13,000 youths from 28 Latin American and Caribbean countries, Africa, and the United States are studying in the ELAM, or have graduated from that school since it was founded, doctor Carrizo reported.
