Turrialba Volcano Increases
Activity
The volcán Turrialba has
increased its activity spewing
sulfur gases and water vapor
from the principal crater since
mid day Thursday.
Experts with the Observatorio
Vulcanológico y Sismológico de
Costa Rica (Ovsicori) and the
Red Sismológica Nacional (RSN)
say that there is no danger of
an imminent eruption.
The changes in the volcano
activity began on March 31 when
area residents alerted
authorities on the increased
smoke coming from the crater and
damage vegetation around the
volcano.
Immediately, the omisión
Nacional de Emergencia (CNE)
ordered preventive measures,
restricting access to the
volcano and the national park.
The Turrialba is classed as an
active volcano, however, the
only eruptions it has had are
between 1864 and 1866.
The volcano stands at 3.340
metres (10.958 feet) above sea
level.
