Largest Cash Seizure At San José Airport
The Costa Rican Drug Control Police (PCD) have arrested two Guatemalans for money laundering, seizing ius$2.1 million dollars, the largest amount of money seized in the country's history, the Ministro de Seguridad Pública said Friday.

According to a press statment, the PCD Thursday found us$1,130,435 dollars on Cabrera Torres, 29, and us$969,600 dollars on Leon Matta, 47, to a total of over us$2.1 million dollars, at the Juan Santamaria (San José) International Airport.

The money was wrapped in carbon paper to avoid being detected by X-rays and trained police dogs.

The PCD beefed up checks at the airport following alerts from El Salvador police. Salvadoran National Police recently arrested a Guatemalan who hid us$319,000 dollars in his luggage at San Salvador's International Airport. The man had planned to fly to Panama via Costa Rica.

The Ministro de Seguridad Pública (Costa Rican Public Security Minister) Fernando Berrocal, said that working alongside Colombia and the United States, the operation formed part of the country's fight against drug trafficking, illicit weapon sales and money laundering.
