Costa Rica Protests Nicaragua
For Sovereignty Violation
The
Costa Rican government has sent
a "strong protest" to Nicaragua
for a "sovereignty violation" in
the detention of a ship and the
statements Nicaragua's President
Daniel Ortega has made about
border territories, the Costa
Rican Foreign Ministry announced
on Thursday.
"My government strongly protests
the national sovereignty
violations perpetuated by the
Republic of Nicaragua, and
demands them to be ceased
immediately, and the return of
the detained ship and guarantees
that said acts will not be
repeated," said a letter signed
by Costa Rican Foreign Minister
Bruno Stagno.
On Tuesday, Nicaraguan officials
detained for several hours a
Costa Rican game fishing boat
and its six crew members, who
included two minors and two
American citizens, alleging they
had illegally entered
Nicaragua's waters.
The ship was in Costa Rican
waters and the Nicaraguan armed
forces illegally entered Costa
Rica's territory, Costa Rican
Foreign Ministry said in its
protest letter released on
Thursday.
The letter said that the
coordinates reported by
Nicaragua's Naval Forces and by
the detained boat proved it was
in Costa Rican territorial
waters.
