Final Countdown for Brazil
Elections
Brazilian candidates, political
leaders and eventual allies are
nearing Thursday the zero hour
of the October 1 general
elections.
Today at 12 midnight marks
expiration of the deadline the
Supreme Electoral Court gave to
the eight presidential
contenders and those aspiring
for other seats to advertise on
radio and TV.
Attacks of Geraldo Alckmin, from
the Social Democrat Party,
against President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva, who seeks
reelection backed by the Workers
Party (PT), have become
frenetic.
Lula has been fiercely accused
of everything, even involved in
the apparent link of PT
officials with the sale of a
dossier containing information
on conservative politicians and
runners.
Without a choice, he removed his
electoral campaign chief and PT
head Ricardo Berzoini, who
appear on the list of those
involved along with Freud Godoy,
from the security group of the
Presidency Secretariat and Jorge
Lorenzetti, former advisor of
the president s reelection
drive, among others.
However, renowned pollsters
coincide that the dossier
scandal did not affect the
statesman, who continues to be
the frontrunner with a 51.1
percent vote intention and very
far from Alckmin, his closest
rival with 27.5.
On Sunday, 126 million
Brazilians go to the polls to
elect a president, 513 deputies,
27 senators, 1,059 state
senators and 27 governors.
