Murders of Women Up in Guatemala
Murder of women continues to
increase in the Guatemalan
capital, where 17 violent deaths
were reported this month,
according to sources of the
Public Ministry.
In July, 11 women were murdered
in Guatemala City, while in
August the number increased to
16, and so far in September
authorities have reported 17,
declared Renato Duran,
prosecutor of Crimes against
Life.
Zenaida Escobedo, delegate of
the Supreme Court of Justice for
the National Intra-Family
Violence Department, highlighted
the predominantly chauvinist
society, the vestiges of the
internal armed conflict,
impunity, poverty and ignorance
as some of the problem’s main
causes.
Although violence against the
female population dates from
many years ago, it has
considerably increased since
2000 due to the lack of
sanctions on the perpetrators,
which leaves them free to
continue committing those
crimes, she pointed out.
According to a study by the
Guatemalan National
Revolutionary Unit (URNG), this
is a delicate social and
security problem which has not
had appropriate political
response from the Executive.
The growing phenomenon of
women´s death by violence calls
for new concepts established by
the Legal Code considering their
particularities and contexts,
URNG warned.
More murders of women are
committed in Guatemala than any
other country on the continent,
and the capital is the most
dangerous.
