FMLN: Fragile Peace in El
Salvador
El Salvador´s Farabundo Marti
National Liberation Front (FMLN)
consider that although peace in
El Salvador is yet to be
consolidated, they will
celebrate the 15 years since the
signing of the treaty leading to
it, announced local sources on
Monday.
FMLN General Coordinator Medardo
Gonzalez stated that those
agreements led to the
coordination of harmony.
However, it did not have the
expected results as the present
Salvadoran situation has the
same nuances of terrorism as
those lived through during the
12-year civil war.
The differences between the
political organizations are the
problem paralyzing economic
development, while the high
rates of violence affect the
population and encourage
emigration.
The long civil war had serious
effects: leaving more than
75,000 dead, 8,000 disappeared,
12,000 handicapped, and
thousands of displaced, as well
as millions in economic losses,
which have not yet been
overcome, the leader pointed
out.
Gonzalez stressed that the
success of peace is a task for
everyone and called on
Salvadoran President Antonio
Saca to continue on the road of
dialogue.
