Officials Deny U.S. Tampered
Nicaragua Election
The Nicaraguan Supreme Electoral
Council (CSE) denied on Monday
having received $3 million from
the US Agency for International
Development (USAID) to finance
the organization in the coming
general elections.
Nicaraguan electoral power
president Roberto Rivas said he
has requested an explanation of
the matter from the
representative of that US
institution to this capital Alex
Dickie.
"The US institution has spent
around one million dollars on
elements that we have suggested,
and it logically favors
democracy in this country. The
problem is where are the two
other million," Rivas
questioned, quoted by El Nuevo
Diario newspaper.
The electoral power president
also said he fears that the
money has ended up in the
coffers of the Movement for
Nicaragua, a civil entity turned
into one of the main inquisitors
of the CSE, faced with the
November 5 elections.
"If they tell me that they gave
part of those two million
dollars to the Movement for
Nicaragua, then that is not to
contribute to the democratic
process in this country," Rivas
stated.
