Traffic Cops Owners Of Taxi
Plates?
The Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT) has begun
an investigation of 13 officials
who were awarded taxi plates,
which in theory would be
required to drive their taxi at
least eight hours a day.
Among the 13 officials,
including several Tránsito
(traffic) police officials.
According to Viviana Martín,
vice-minister of Transportes,
the investigation is to
corroborate the accusations of
taxi plates in the hands of MOPT
officials.
The question being raised is can
a Tránsito official hold a taxi
plate? and after working a full
day as a traffic official can he
then drive a taxi for 8 hours?
Those are difficult questions
facing MOPT authorities, where
the answers are unclear.
The investigation is not only to
confirm that MOPT officials have
the taxi plates, but also who
they got them.
If the investigation reveals
improprieties in the awarding of
the plates, those responsible
will be sanctioned, as well,
those MOPT officials who don't
drive the required 8 hours will
lose their taxi plates, said
vice-minister Marín.
