Theft of the Century Was How Much?
Guatemala - The September 7 million-dollar robbery in Guatemala is making headlines again as authorities clash over exactly how much was stolen from La Aurora International Airport security area.

The Bank Supervisory Office, which controls the domestic financial system, claims nine million dollars was taken, while the Police and Wackenhut Security Company insist it was 8.6 million; almost half a million dollar discrepancy.

It took several men only ten minutes to intercept the vehicle and steal most of the 22 bags with 11.1 million dollars, without firing a single shot or causing one victim.

The stolen money were remittances from nine banks to the US Federal Reserve for deposit in several accounts.

The police never checked the contents in the remaining bags, and contradictions have blossomed over the vehicle's capacity to carry so many bags.

Meanwhile, the "Theft of the Century" could cause the airport to lose its license as an international terminal, limiting operations to domestic flights.

In addition, it would frustrate an investment of millions to modernize the terminal and Guatemala's hope to reach Category One in international standards.
