Chavez Unstoppable to Reelection
With at least 41 percentage
points over his closest
contender, Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez strengthened his
probable triumph and fulfill his
promise to cross his new
ceremonial sash to the left.
The two latest polls, IVAD and
Datanalisis, reflect an
advantage difficult to revert
less than three months before
the December 3 elections.
Datanalisis conferred Chavez a
voter intention of 58.2 percent,
while IVAD gave him 76.9 points,
enough for a wide victory over
any other candidate.
Referring to his advantage and
to a socialist government plan,
Chavez asserted he would wear a
specially made ¨leftwing¨
ceremonial sash so that he can
change it to his left side on
February 2, 2007 when he starts
the new presidential term.
This superiority raised doubts
that Zulia Gov. Manuel Rosales
would stay the course, mainly
due to the pressure by internal
opposition sectors and the US to
encourage abstention.
October will be a decisive month
for the opposition´s decision,
since it has only 20 percent of
vote intention, no charismatic
candidate, or a program able to
change the present situation.
