World Award for Cuban Five
A world celebration for the
release of five Cuban
anti-terrorist fighters
imprisoned in US for fighting
terrorism starts Tuesday in this
capital with the delivery of the
Benito Juarez International
Award to their relatives.
The solemn ceremony will be at
the Havana s Jose Marti
Memorial, in recognition of the
heroic life and example of
resistance of these men,
unfairly sentenced to long years
of imprisonment in a manipulated
trial.
Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando
Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Rene
Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero
won the award, granted by
different Mexican social groups,
due to their outstanding
struggle in defense of their
people s sovereignty and
self-determination.
The award is inspired by the
thought of Mexican hero Benito
Juarez, "Benemérito de las
Américas" ("Meritous One of the
Americas"), and was instituted
in Arusha, Tanzania, 19 years
ago, during the celebration of
the 75th anniversary of the
African National Congress.
The international celebration
for the release of five Cuban
patriots will end on October 6,
date of the 30th anniversary of
the explosion in the air of a
Cubana airplane with 73
passengers.
