Argentina Returns to NAM
After over a decade of absence
from the Non Aligned Movement
summits, Argentina participated
Tuesday as a guest at the 14th
NAM Summit, which is being held
in the Cuban capital from
September 11 to16.
Manuel Fernandez, from the
Argentine Foreign Affairs
Ministry´s Office of
International Organizations,
said this is an excellent
opportunity for Argentina to
hear and know the thinking,
opinions, and criteria that
prevail in an important number
of countries.
“The NAM summit is also a good
opportunity to express opinions
on topics of common interest and
matters we are interested in,
and why not, to express our
points of view,” Fernandez told
Prensa Latina.
Another 33 States from different
continents sent their
representatives to NAM summit to
take part as guests.
Representatives of the 116 NAM
member countries and 23
organizations are attending the
weeklong meeting.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan
is also expected to be in Havana
for the NAM Summit.
Argentina became a full member
of NAM in 1973 during the
presidency of Juan Peron, but
began to separate from the
organization during the last
dictatorship.
The untimely departure from NAM
was decided by Carlos Menem, who
considered that with the end of
the Cold War the non aligned
movement made no sense and also
declared Argentina a strategic
ally of the US.
