Third Consecutive
Gasoline Price Drop Approved
Get ready for another, are you
ready? gas drop. Yes, you read
it right, drop.
The Autoridad Reguladora de
Servicios Públicos (ARESEP) -
the government regulator of
public prices and services - set
another record, beating the one
set two weeks ago, in approving
a price reduction for the price
of regular and super gasoline.
The approval came yesterday,
within the same day that the
Refinadora Costarricense de
Petróleo (RECOPE) made the
request. Normally, the Aresep
can take up to fifteen days for
any approval.
In the past, the government body
has taken up to 10 days to
approve gasoline price increases
and some five to seven days for
price drops. The last drop
approved two weeks ago, it took
the Aresep two days. The price
drop took effect last week.
Yesterday's approval, one for
the record books, will set the
price for a litre of gasoline
from the current ¢547 colones to
¢528 and the price for a litre
of regular will drop from the
current ¢520 to ¢501, a drop of
¢19 colones.
This is the third consecutive
drop in one month. The price for
a litre of super at the
beginning of August was ¢575 and
¢550 for regular.
Gasoline prices went through the
roof, going from ¢422 a litre of
super and ¢402 a litre for
regular at the beginning of the
year to a high of ¢597 and ¢573
respectively, on August 10.
The new price will take effect
once the approval is published
in the official government
publication, La Gaceta, which is
to be no more than five working
days from yesterday.
A good bet is Thursday, just in
time for the long holiday
weekend that begins next Friday,
as Costa Rica celebrates it's
independence day on September
15.
