Cuba Part of NAM History
The celebration in this capital of the 14th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit is a prestigious occasion for Cuba within that organization and in the international arena.

The Caribbean island was one of the founders of the Movement when its Cuban President Osvaldo Dorticos presided over that nation s delegation to the forum s constitution session 45 years ago in Belgrade.

Cuba signed, along with other founders, for those principles to give life to that organization of inter-government political agreement, defending multilateralism and fighting for peace and cooperation.

At that moment, the new Cuban Revolution was member of the Movement, whose main aim was to eliminate the so-called cold war and hegemony imposed by US aggression, as well as the peoples self-determination.

Since then, the group always found in the island a factor that stimulated NAM unity and strength, for being a stabilizing mechanism of the international policy.

From 1979- to 983, Cuba was the voice of the Movement, and supported the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples faced with aggression from Israel and African nations in its resistance to the savage racist forces.

The Caribbean island s permanent effort in favor of the NAM as an important force on the international stage and the role it had to play in the political situation influenced its appointment as venue for the 14th Summit.
