Egypt Decides to Restore Ties
With Costa Rica
Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed
Abul Gheit said on Monday that
measures were underway to
restore diplomatic relations
between Egypt and Costa Rica and
El Salvador, MENA news agency
reported.
The report said, citing a press
statement issued by the
ministry, Abul Gheit welcomed
the decisions made by the two
central American countries to
move their embassies from
Jerusalem to Tel Aviv,
describing the steps as
positive.
The two countries' decisions
came out of their keenness on
bolstering relations with Arab
states, said the foreign
minister.
On Aug. 16, Costa Rica decided
to move its mission from
Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, which was
followed by El Salvador on Aug.
26.
Egypt severed relations with
Costa Rica in 1983 after it
moved its embassy from Tel Aviv
to Jerusalem in 1982. The
relations between Egypt and El
Salvador also came to an end in
1984 for the same reason.
Egypt signed a peace deal with
Israel in 1979, which made it
the first Arab nation to have
diplomatic ties with Israel.
However, Palestinians have long
demanded Israel to withdraw to
the 1967 borders and wanted to
establish an independent
Palestinian statehood with
Jerusalem as a capital.
