Cuban newspaper: Non-Aligned
Movement has an unfinished
agenda
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
has an unfinished agenda with
many unresolved key issues, a
Cuban official newspaper said on
Friday.
In an article entitled
"Unfinished Agenda," the Granma
newspaper recalls NAM,
established on Sept. 1, 1961 in
Belgrade, as an unequivocal
expression of the birth of
national liberation movements in
many countries, especially
African nations that stopped
being colonized.
The 25 founding nations of the
movement, it said, envisioned
the strength NAM would have from
then on in its fight against
colonialism, imperialism,
racism, apartheid and all other
forms of oppression and
domination.
Granma added that the principles
on which NAM was established
agreed with the fairest and most
legitimate aspirations of
three-quarters of the world's
population who live in
developing countries.
While reaffirming that the
spectrum of Third World crucial
problems was still vast, it said
countries' self-government, a
key NAM principle, had not been
completely fulfilled.
And the same goes for
eliminating racism, military
bases that threaten sovereignty
in a number of nations and
unfair economic relations
between the North and South,
said Granma.
It also said there was a need to
democratize the United Nations,
to achieve peace not only among
rich countries, but among poor
ones.
