Police arrest 28 suspects
involved in Brazil's biggest
bank robbery
Brazilian Federal Police on
Friday arrested 28 suspects
allegedly involved in the
biggest bank robbery in the
country's history.
The police, who had been
tracking the suspects in 10
states, said ten arrests were
made on Friday when the suspects
were robbing other banks.
Police also said two of the
arrestees were alleged members
of the criminal gang PCC, which
struggles to control inmate
centers in Sao Paulo state and
was charged with waging attacks
in the state in May and August
this year.
In August 2005, the gang dug a
tunnel linking a nearby house
and a branch of Brazil's Central
Bank in Fortaleza, the capital
of Ceara state, and stole over
150 million reals (70 million
U.S. dollars).
Shortly after the robbery, the
Federal Police launched
Operation Mole to catch the
perpetrators. A prepaid mobile
phone card, found at the
crime scene, led agents to
monitor the gang's phone calls
since then.
