La Reforma Escape Not Fault Of
Guards, Contradicting Government
Report
Asociación Nacional de Empleados
Públicos (ANEP) is denying a
government report that says the
security team at the La Reforma
prison was responsible for the
escape of eight prisons earlier
this month.
On October 9, eight inmates
overtook the security detail,
stole their firearms, killing
one official in the process, and
made their escape to an awaiting
vehicle a short distance from
the prison located in Alajuela.
The union representatitve for
the guards at the prison,
contradict the government
report, saying that the escape
was due to insufficient security
measures at the prison, which
houses some of the worst
criminals in the country.
The guards say that the problem
is not unique to the La Reforma,
but also at other prisons around
the country.
In addition, the guards, say
there work with insufficient
sleeping quarters, balanced
meals, bulletproof vests, modern
firearms, proper training and
alarms that work.
To date, six of the escape
prisoners have been apprehended
(one died in a shoothout with
police), all being captured in
the province of Limón.
One escaped prisoner was
apprehended while enjoying the
festivities of the annual Limón
carnival. The other five were
located in a house, where police
found plans for a kidnapping
that the group had been working
on.
The two remaining escapees are
considered dangerous and have
already raped one woman and
forcing her to give up her house
for shelter and food.
