Landslide Buries Houses, Leaves Six Dead in Guatemala
At least six persons died today, including a child, from the landslide off a mountain that buried a village of the La Democracia municipality, in the Guatemalan Department of Huehuetenango.

Pouring rains over the last few days provoked the landslide, leaving other six people injured and eight not accounted for, all belonging to the same family.

Members of the Coordinadora Nacional para la Reduccion de Desastres (CONRED) joined voluntary firemen and soldiers of the armed forces to help in the rescue of the victims.

Until the moment, 300 persons of that mountainous area of western Guatemala were evacuated and taken to temporary refuge buildings, informed the Department governor Jose Mariano Diaz.

The official called on all the entities, both of the government and the civil society, to send help in order to help the victims.

The rains also provoked road interruptions, making it difficult to reach several communities in the border with Mexico. The rise of at least seven rivers in the south of the country flooded 40 villages, leaving 10 thousand homeless.
