OIJ Surprises Escaped Convicts, Captures Four in Early Morning Raid
While the nation was focusing on the TLC protests and as the Ministerio de Seguridad Pública focused on keeping civil order and peace during the protests, there was one group who had other things in mind, the capture of the eight convicts who escaped from the La Reforma prison two weeks ago.

On Sunday, the first of the escaped convicts was apprehended while enjoying the closing day of the Carnavales de Limón. The special unit of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) acted on an anonymous tip and quickly and without incident arrested the man.

In the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), the OIJ raided a home in barrio La Clínica de Guácimo, an hour away from Limón, where four more escapees were hiding out.

Three of the men were taken into police custody without incident. The fourth was shot by police when he opened fire on police in a shootout. One OIJ official was injured by gunshot. One of the escapees was injured and taken to a San José hospital with seven bullet wounds.

Jorge Rojas, director of the OIJ, who as personally present during the raid said he was pleased with the operation and reinforced the danger that these men posed to the community as they were heavily armed. Rojas said he would produce the high caliber firearms to the press later today to demonstrate to the public the danger that the three still at large continue to pose.

Rojas added that a simultaneous raid in a home in Pacuare resulted in failure, as the suspects were not to be found.

The number of escapees apprehended is now at five, with three more still on the lam.
