UN Renews Vote on Latin American Seat Today
The UN General Assembly will try to choose a Latin America and Caribbean candidate for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, after over 20 unsuccessful voting rounds.

The 192 UN state members have been trying to choose since Monday between Guatemala and Venezuela which will be elected for the post Argentina will leave on December 31.

In opinion of Latin American diplomats who requested to remain anonymous, the US "excessive support" of Guatemala and inside and outside pressures to impede Venezuela's election seem to have stagnated this process.

At the end of the 22 voting rounds on Monday and Tuesday, Guatemala was first with 102 favorable ballots, and Venezuela 77, but with no clear sign that one of the two aspirants will achieve the two thirds to win a non-permanent seat.

So far, results of over 20 voting rounds confirm that Washington has not yet achieved keeping Venezuela out, while at the same time it seems to have serious difficulties to secure Guatemala"s victory.

The 32 ambassadors of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) at the UN held closed door consultations Wednesday over the delay.
