Guatemalans Recall 1944 Revolution
Guatemalan public health workers convoked a march of all social sectors for Friday, October 20, to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the Revolution begun on that date in 1944.

This revolution gave way to a 10-year period in which changes and modifications were begun, including a law of agrarian reform.

Luis Lara, leader of the public health union, said this will serve as an opportunity to publicly reiterate rejection of current government policies affecting workers, farmers, students and women.

The union leader also said Friday s march will allow Guatemalans to denounce the despoiling of their land, sacking of their natural resources and violation of their fundamental rights.

He said that the Guatemalan population suffers severe consequences from increased prices of electricity, domestic gas, gasoline and by-products, and the devaluation of the national currency.

Signing of the Free Trade Treaty with the US leaves small and medium producers at flagrant disadvantage, and they are beginning to feel the effects.

He also pointed out the persecution of workers in the informal economy to guarantee profits and advantages for transnationals producing clothes, shoes, music and films.
