New
Exchange System Begins Today
Beginning today there is a new
exchange rate system in Costa
Rica, as the Banco Central de
Costa Rica (BCCR) - Central Bank
- announced last Friday evening
that individual banks would be
allowed to set their own
exchange rate within a range of
low and high, known in Spanish
as "banda cambaririas".
Online Gambling Sites Operating
in Costa Rica Despite U.S. Law
Costa Rica Several operators of
Internet gambling sites in Costa
Rica known as "sportsbooks" say
their businesses will not be
significantly affected by a new
U.S. law prohibiting bank and
credit card payments to the
sites.
Spanish Woman Arrested Smuggling
Cocaine
Costa Rica's Policía de Control
de Drogas (PCD) - drug control
police - said on Monday that
they arrested a Spanish woman at
the Juan Santamaría (San
Jose's)International Airport,
who was trying to smuggle 9.6 kg
of cocaine out of the country.

& 24 Protest Action Being
Finalized
The Coordinadora Nacional de
Lucha contra el TLC (co-ordinator
in the fight against the trade
agreement) are finalizing their
plans for a national protest for
next week - October 23 & 24 -
when the country will supposedly
be paralyzed as the various
public institutions go on a
national strike.

Dean Faiello, a cocaine addict
who pretended to be a doctor
pleaded guilty Monday in
connection with the death of a
woman who died during a medical
procedure he was performing on
her in his Manhattan apartment
