Honduras, El Salvador Island
Dispute
The government of Honduras
expects to solve its dispute
with El Salvador over the rocky
Conejo island diplomatically.
According to President Manuel
Zelaya the right of his country
to the Pacific sea and
consequently the sovereignty of
Fonseca Gulf where the isle is
delimitating the possession,
jurisdiction and use in the
area, has already been proven by
The Hague International Court of
Justice.
The dignitary said El Salvador s
claim to the isle is not valid
since both nations approved the
International Court sentence
that gave Honduras 311.6 square
kilometres and 134.9 to its
neighbour in 1992.
The territorial dispute emerged
last week when the protest of
Honduran foreign minister Milton
Jimenez referred to the
Salvadorian White Book of the
Ministry of Defense in which
appears two "absolutely
imprecise" elements in relation
to the item.
El Salvador considers the island
its own, stating that Honduras
has no access to the Pacific sea
so it demanded to correct the
case.
