October 23 & 24 Protest Action
Being Finalized
The Coordinadora Nacional de
Lucha contra el TLC (co-ordinator
in the fight against the trade
agreement) are finalizing their
plans for a national protest for
next week - October 23 & 24 -
when the country will supposedly
be paralyzed as the various
public institutions go on a
national strike.
The days are being called "Jornada
Nacional de Resistencia"
(national resistance day) will
affect the entire country
The organizers say that unions
of Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE), the
Instituto Nacional de Seguros
(INS), the Unión Nacional de
Empleados de la Caja y de la
Seguridad Social (Undeca), the
Asociación Nacional de Empleados
Públicos y Privados (ANEP), the
Magisterio Nacional,
ambientalistas, ecologistas,
cooperativistas, estudiantes
universitarios, transportistas,
representative of the Unión
Nacional de Productores
Agropecuarios (Upanacional) and
the Corporación Arrocera (Conarroz),
among others, will join forces.
Edgar Morales, secretary general
of the Asociación Nacional de
Empleados Públicos y Privados (ANEP),
said that this protest will be
different than those of the past
that in this protest every
community and corner of the
country will be in protest not
just in San José.
Public services are expected to
be paralyzed during the two
days. The telephone company will
not be available to issue new
lines or receive payment, but
will attend to emergency
repairs. Same goes for the power
and water institutions.
Hardest hit will be the public
hospitals and clinics where
thousands of medical
appointments - some having
waiting months and years - will
be cancelled, as well as
surgeries that will have to be
postponed. Emergency medical
attention will still be offered.
The full details of the protest

later today.
