Sugar Prices Clashes Occur in
Honduras
Honduras governmental
authorities Thursday cracked
down on representatives of the
sugar sector, giving them an
ultimatum to immediately lower
sugar prices.
According to press reports, the
Ministry of Trade and Industry
decided to open borders and
import the product in case they
don´t receive a favorable
response from the sugar
refineries.
The labor union applied last
week for an increase of one
dollar with 66 cents per ton of
sugar, causing discomfort among
consumers. It is confirmed it´ s
one of the more benefited items
by the Free Trade Agreement
which increased imports.
The president of the Producers
Association, Carlos Melara,
alleged that costs have been
raised by labor and machinery
prices.
