Thousands Die in Honduran
Disasters
Natural disasters have claimed
over 30,000 lives in Honduras in
the last 25 years, according to
reports published in this
capital Thursday.
Losses to the national economy
reach $186 million, states a
report of the Inter-American
Development Bank.
To face these disasters the
Permanent Contingencies
Commission (COPECO) has a
contingency plan, concentrating
on geological faults and
overflowing of rivers, which are
the most frequent accidents in
the country.
COPECO director Juan Elvir said
that over 200 municipal, local
and national emergency
committees have been organized
to work with financial
contribution of the government
and civil society.
